Applications of Hot Melt Adhesive

Packaging and Printing Industry:

Hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesive blocks are widely used in label coating, tape manufacturing, and packaging lamination.Melted through professional hot-melt coating systems, they enable continuous and uniform application, meeting the requirements of high-speed production lines for stable performance, strong initial tack, and excellent holding power. They are commonly applied in food, personal care, and logistics packaging.

Medical and Hygiene Products Industry:

In medical tapes, wound dressings, nonwoven products, and disposable hygiene items, hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesive blocks are favored for their solvent-free, low-odor, and low-irritation characteristics.Centralized melting and coating processes ensure large-area, even adhesive application, providing reliable bonding performance while maintaining high safety standards for skin contact.

Electronics and Electrical Manufacturing Industry: In the electronics and electrical sector, hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesive blocks are mainly used for protective film lamination, cushioning material bonding, insulation material fixing, and auxiliary structural bonding.
With automated melting and coating systems, they meet the demands of mass production for consistency, reliability, and aging resistance, improving assembly efficiency and product stability.

Automotive and Transportation Industry: Hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesive blocks are extensively applied in automotive interior material lamination, sound and thermal insulation bonding, decorative trim fixing, and protective film applications.Featuring excellent resistance to high and low temperatures and vibration, they maintain stable adhesion under complex operating conditions, contributing to overall vehicle quality and comfort.

Building and Decoration Materials Industry: In the construction and decoration field, these adhesive blocks are commonly used for carpet backing, protective film bonding, temporary fixing of decorative panels, and roll material lamination.Through centralized hot-melt coating processes, they offer high application efficiency and clean job sites, making them especially suitable for prefabricated buildings, interior finishing, and large-area installations.

Textile and Nonwoven Products Industry: In the production of nonwovens, functional fabrics, and composite materials, hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesive blocks are mainly applied for layer bonding, structural fixation, and functional coating. With excellent flexibility and stable adhesion that does not affect material hand feel, they support continuous industrial production while enhancing the comfort and durability of end products.

Composition of Hot Melt Adhesives

The base polymer is the molecular backbone of the systems, and it is used to provide the inherent strength and chemical resistance as well as the application characteristics.

Tackifiers are added to improve initial adhesion and to modify the base polymer. Processing oils and waxes are used to adjust viscosity and set times. Both tackifiers and processing materials will affect the glass transition temperature (Tg) and melting point of the final product.

Fillers are used to fine-tune certain properties such as melt viscosity, thermal expansion coefficient, set time, etc. Antioxidants are used to provide oxidation resistance - more for the polymer in the application state rather than in the final joint. UV stabilizers or inhibitors are added to provide stability against exposure to light.

Production Process of Hot Melt Adhesive

Mattress Hot Melt Adhesive

Hot melt adhesives are thermoplastic materials that become pliable or plastic when heated and solidify as they cool. They are free from any liquid components. The essential raw materials for producing hot melt adhesives include resins, polymers, plasticizers, waxes, and antioxidants. After these ingredients are combined, the adhesive solidifies into its final form, ready for use or distribution across various industries. Common types of hot melt adhesives include polyurethane, metallocene, EVA, and polyethylene.

Hot melt adhesives are heated until they reach a liquid state. This liquid is then applied to the target surface using methods such as spraying, rolling, or extrusion. Following application, the adhesive is allowed to briefly settle to achieve the ideal moisture level and temperature for effective bonding. The two surfaces are then joined, and in some cases, pressure is applied to ensure a robust and effective bond.

FAQ

Q: Is hot melt adhesive strong?

A: Because of its great strength, it is used in tons of manufacturing and product assembly applications across the world. It can be applied as a bead or sprayed to covering large surface areas.

Q: What does hot melt glue not stick to?

A: What surfaces does hot glue not stick to? Hot glue will not stick to very smooth surfaces, like metal, silicone, vinyl, wax, or greasy and wet surfaces.

Q: What is an example of a hot melt adhesive?

A: Some of the possible base materials of hot-melt adhesives include the following: Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers, low-performance, the low-cost and most common material for the glue sticks.

Q: How long does it take for hot melt glue to cure?

A: Some PUR hot melt adhesives have fast set times and can form strong initial bonds in as little as 15 seconds. Most PUR adhesives also require 24 hours before they are completely cured, and during this time their strength continues to increase from reactions with the moisture in the air.

Q: What does hot melt glue work best with?

A: Hot melt glue sticks provide a high-strength bond between papers, cardboards, plastics and other materials, making them a good choice for a wide range of packaging containers.

Q: Why is my hot glue not sticking to metal?

A: Be sure the metal is clean, free of dirt and oils. - Use mild soapy water to clean the metal, not solvents such as alcohol, acetone, or citrus based cleaners.

Q: How to make hot melt adhesive?

A: The hot melt adhesive is obtained by the steps of melting, adding the polyethylene wax and antioxidants, adding the rosin resins, vacuumizing, granulating and packaging.

Q: Is hot melt adhesive waterproof?

A: This high-performance hot melt adhesive is specifically designed for waterproof applications, making it the perfect choice for any project that requires a strong, durable bond that can stand up to water and moisture.
